Another category, Psychiatric Service Animals are like working seeing eye dogs for often invisible psychiatric disabilities. A service animal may be able to sense the emotional state of the individual, enable communication, do tasks and can also provide socialization opportunities when the animal is not on duty. In many jurisdictions, service animals are allowed access in public and private locations by Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) law where pets may be restricted.
The twenty plus year old human service organization DeltaSociety lists Animals Resources Bibliography for further background on how animals can be used therapeutically and as activities for psychiatric disorders like depression and more visible disabilities.
